Lower is better. On a phone, walk around and watch it settle.

Eight timed round trips and a 6 MB download, scored the way the app does.

Three steps to the best room in the house.

Real screens from the app. The live reading is real; the saved rooms are examples.

The Meter tab: a live latency of 17 ms, a line of the last readings, and the Save this spot button
  1. Walk

Open the meter and move from room to room. It times the connection once a second, so the good spots show themselves.

The Meter tab: a live latency of 17 ms, a line of the last readings, and the Save this spot button
  2. Save

Name the room and tap Test & save. Eight timed round trips and a real download, done in seconds.

Saving a spot: Kitchen typed in as its name, with Cancel and Test & save
  3. Compare

Every room scored out of 100 and ranked best first. Retest one at a busy hour, rename it or delete it.

The Spots tab: Living room scores 98, Study 91 and Kitchen 75, each with its latency, download speed and jitter

A score you can check.

Each room gets a score out of 100 from three measurements. Move them and watch it change. If you scored this spot above, use your own reading.

18 ms

The quickest of eight round trips. Full marks at 20 ms, none at 300.

85 Mbps

A real 6 MB download, timed. Full marks at about 100 Mbps.

4 ms

How much the round trips vary. A steady link scores higher.

Bars would be a guess, so it times the connection.

Phones do not let an ordinary app read the raw radio signal. What decides whether a call holds up in a room is how quickly and steadily the connection answers, so that is what it measures.

Latency

An empty reply from Google’s connectivity check, timed there and back.

Download

A 6 MB file from Cloudflare’s speed test, timed start to finish.

Honest about outages

Connected with no internet behind it is a different problem, and it says which one you have.

Nothing leaves the phone

Saved rooms stay on the device. No account, no sign in, no adverts.
